Dissemination Event Cluster Two - Lisbon

At the end of May there were elections for the European Parliament. The euro-zone crisis and the wider financial crisis has shaken the European project. Euro barometer surveys are showing growing levels of dissatisfaction and low levels of trust in EU institutions.

On May 9th, Europe day, we have organized a transnational workshop that looked for the highlight we could counter low trust in our political parties both at national and European levels.

One thing is clear: we need greater diversity in political representation. In particular we need to increase the involvement of women.

Despite the improvements in addressing inequality between men and women over the past 30-40 years, there is still a long way to go in realizing real equality. Women still face glass ceilings, pay discrimination, gender stereotyping, violence and sexual exploitation and the overwhelming bulk of care responsibilities.

Getting more women into politics is part of the process of making more headway in realizing the goal of gender equality.

The workshop has had:

• inputs from women politicians who will speak about their experience of being in politics

• inputs from delegates from several EU member states highlighting actions that are being taken to get more women elected

• inputs from women politicians regarding the challenges facing Europe from a women’s perspective
