The Intercultural Institute of Timisoara (IIT) has been established in 1992 by a group of teachers with the support of the local authorities of Timisoara and of the Council of Europe. It is an autonomous NGO, having cultural, civic and scientific activities, without political purposes, which address to the values and the principles of the Council of Europe concerning the intercultural approach in education, cultural policy, research and civil society. The IIT has a wide network of partners from different regions of Romania and from several European countries, including (local, regional and national) government, NGOs and professionals.
The support of Roma communities is one of priorities of IIT and continuously projects are being carried out. Among them there are the employment of Roma school mediators, the (intercultural) training of teachers and mediators, the cooperation between Roma and local authorities and the monitoring of the press/media. Currently IIT is involved in the setup of Roma Inclusion centres (cross-border cooperation with Serbia) and there is a pilot in which high school students suggest solutions for Roma issues.
In 1998 the IIT became the first Eastern-European institution that coordinates a transnational SOCRATES - COMENIUS action 2 project - the EURROM project, which develop methodological guidelines and resources for teachers working with Roma children in order to integrate Roma culture into the educational process. Since then the IIT has developed close partnerships with several civic, minorities and youth NGOs from Yugoslavia. Two representatives of the IIT are members of working groups of the Education Task Force of the Stability Pact for South-East Europe.
IIT has produced different publications in Romanian, French, English and Hungarian, including guides for teachers, for Roma mediators and for professionals that work with youth.
